Candidate filing for City Council positions for the November 7, 2017 Regular Municipal Election in the City of Sherman begins July 22, 2017, at 8 a.m. Filing ends August 21, 2017 at 5 p.m. Even though the filing period begins on Saturday, July 22, the City Clerk’s Office is not required to be open so candidates can begin filing on Monday, July 24, 2017. Candidates may obtain the necessary applications and supporting documents from the City Clerk between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The Council positions open for the November 7 Election are for Council Member, District 2 and Council Member, District 4. All positions are voted on at-large, by the citizens of Sherman. The Council positions are currently held by Terrence Steele (District 2) and Charles H. Brown, Sr. (District 4). Both Council Members are eligible for re-election.
Candidates for City Council must live in the district they are elected to represent. District 2 is located in northeast Sherman, north of the railroad track behind Washington Street and east of Travis Street; District 4 is located in southwest Sherman, south of the railroad track behind Washington Street and west of Travis Street.
All eligible voters in Sherman will vote for all of the City Council positions on the ballot. Any citizen considering making an application for candidacy must be a United States citizen, 21 years of age or older, a resident of Sherman for the past twelve months, and must be a registered voter.
