The Benefit of Flannels

Flannels I made to tell a short story from Frog and Toad Are Friends

Visuals are a great way to help introduce new vocabulary, emphasize parts of a story, and welcome interaction in the art of storytelling. They have a terrific part in story time, but did you know that you can make your own? They are pretty simple to make. All you need are flannel pieces, scissors, and fabric glue. What you create, either based off a story or to use with favorite rhymes, do not need to be masterpieces. Better yet, make the flannel pieces and give them to your children to assemble however they want. These are called "Busy Bags" and here is one of those from Money Saving Mom. By using "Busy Bag" type of flannels, you can have your child practice their narrative skills, that is the art of explaining and communicating their thoughts. It can also be a way for you to introduce new vocabulary.
