Who's in the zoo to visit?

Posted on September 27, 2016 at 9:42 AM by Christina Stuck

This week we are looking at zoos and what kind of animals reside in zoos. There are so many wonderful zoo books out there! More than I can share during story time. Here are a few particularly stellar zoo books:

1, 2, 3, To the Zoo: A Counting Book by Eric Carle
Fraidyzoo by Thyra Heder
Color Zoo by Lois Ehlert
Wild About You! by Judy Sierra & Marc Brown
Good Night, Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann
Count the Monkeys by Marc Barnett & Kevin Cordell
The Opposite Zoo by Il Sung Na
What's New? The Zoo! by Kathleen Krull & Marcellus Hall
Kali's Story by Jennifer Keats Curtis & John Gomes
Ivan: The Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla by Katherine Applegate & G. Brian Karas (basically, a simplified version of Applegate's Newbery winner chapter book The One and Only Ivan)

Of course since pretty much ANY animal can live in a zoo, you can also share books from our non-fiction section. We have plenty of preschool books on different animals, reptiles, and the like.

Here a little ditty you can sing with your child about zoo animals:

"If You're Ever at the Zoo"
(tune of "Did You Ever See a Lassie?")

If you're ever at the zoo, the zoo, the zoo,
If you're ever at the zoo, which creatures will you see?
A monkey, a camel,
Kangaroos or a lion.
If you're ever at the zoo, which creatures will you see?

You can let your child pick the four different animals to include in the song. Have fun acting them out while you sing!
