This week in our story times, we are covering transportation. There are so many fantastic transportation books out there! We only read two books today: My Truck is Stuck by Kevin Lewis and Daniel Kirk and The Wheels on the Tuk Tuk by mother-son team Surishtha & Kabir Sehgal (and such a beautifully illustrated book by Jess Golden). But I highly recommend My Bike by Byron Barton, The Relatives Came (a Caldecott winner) by Cynthia Rylant and Stephen Gammell, and Bunnies on the Go by Rick Walton and Paige Miglio. Of course, these books do not really include planes, trains, and boats, but are a great way to help explain the purpose behind using transportation: to get us from one spot to another.

We played with two songs that dealt with trains, however. By using these songs and a piece of yarn, the kids learned about shapes and also the value in waiting. We acted like a train going down the track with "The Little Red Caboose" from Laurie Berkner's Favorite Classic Kid's Songs. During the song, everyone held the piece of string and followed our "engine." With "Down by the Station," we stood in a circle and practiced waiting for the sound cues to move in special ways during the song.
