Hickety, Pickety, Bumble Bee

Here is a fun name game to play. It can also help with your child's focus. It is from Marie Rogers at Hardin County Public Library in Kentucky.

"Hickety, Pickety, Bumble Bee"
Hickety, Pickety, Bumble Bee.
Who can say their name for me?
(Child says name)
Clap it. (Clap at the syllables)
Whisper it.
No sound it. (Mouth the name)
Hickety, Pickety, Bumble Bee.

By using a child's first name (which means so much to him or her!) in these three ways, you emphasize that words are made up of smaller sounds/syllables. This knowledge, of course, will come in handy when he or she picks up reading and tries to decode larger words.

This game can be played with babies and toddlers. It is especially great to do it with the child facing you so he or she can watch how your mouth forms the words and sounds.
