One way to help your child get ready to read is by helping him or her see a value in print. A simple way to help give meaning to print is by pointing out signs and symbols. Nearly every business uses a symbol as a brand. In fact, the ones your child will point out gives you a big indication as to where you shop most often.
One symbol we are talking about this week during out story times is the one for recycling. Recycling is a great way to help your child become aware of (1) litter and (2) how to take care of things. Not everything we throw away can be recycled, but a lot of it can. Try to show your child the symbol for a recycling bin and then help him or her recycle an object every time you pass by. Soon, your child will be "reading" the symbol because it has meaning.
